In essence the education of a classical performer is structured through repetition, instructions, and an organized system of grading and competition. Where, then, does the creativity come in to play?
Perhaps this is in part why classical music struggles against an evolving world of media and entertainment. It is cloistered in by tradition and elitism that abandons support or recognition for any project that doesn’t follow closely to the know boundaries of what is normal and excepted.
Creativity is thinking outside of the box, and if all we ever do is sure up the walls of that box how are we ever going to get out?
